Il Sud Africa è un paese incredibile da scoprire grazie alla natura incontaminata e alla vita cosmopolita delle principali città. Qui la vita gay è attiva e vibrante e Cape Town è un gioielli da scoprire. Abbiamo intervistato i travel blogger Sion e Ben, una coppia sposata originaria del Regno Unito, che insieme hanno fondato The Globetrotter Guys. Entrambi hanno vissuto per molto tempo a Cape Town e hanno condiviso con noi i luoghi più belli che non possono essere persi se si visita Cape Town.

Abbiamo avuto il piacere di chiacchierare con Sion e Ben che ci hanno raccontato qualcosa in più sul loro lavoro da travel blogger e di viaggiatori a tempo pieno.

Quando è nato il progetto The Globetrotter Guys e come mai avete deciso di aprire un blog di viaggi?

Abbiamo aperto The Globetrotter Guys nel gennaio del 2018 (sia il blog di viaggi gay che il profilo Instagram). Abbiamo viaggiato per 9 mesi nel 2011 e subito dopo sentivamo di volerlo fare nuovamente. Ma questa volta, dopo aver visto tantissimi travel blog gay che ci hanno ispirato, abbiamo pensato di creare il nostro per documentare in modo nuovo i nostri viaggi e dare ai futuri viaggiatori gay tanti consigli.

Come è viaggiare in coppia e come scegliete le mete da visitare?

Proviamo sempre a focalizzarci su destinazioni che non abbiamo visitato e che anche altro viaggiatori gay non hanno ancora esplorato al meglio. Per esempio abbiamo passato tantissimo tempo in Centro America lo scorso anno e le cose che abbiamo imparato in paesi come Guatemala e Nicaragua ci hanno davvero sorpreso.

Viaggiare in coppia può essere molto difficile in Paesi dove essere gay è ancora illegale. Visitate questi Paesi o preferite evitarli?

Non ne abbiamo ancora visitato uno. Capiamo totalmente le argomentazioni in un senso e nell’altro ma può essere davvero rischioso visitare questi posti ed è importantissimo considerare sempre prima le questioni di sicurezza. Fortunatamente al momento non abbiamo mai vissuto situazioni spiacevoli dovute al nostro essere gay in nessuna delle destinazioni che abbiamo visitato.

Avete un ricordo di viaggio che vi è rimasto particolarmente nel cuore?

Uno dei migliori ricordi che abbiamo è dello scorso anno quando siamo stati strabiliati da Corn Islands in Nicaragua. E’ davvero un paradiso nascosto e sia noi che le persone con cui abbiamo parlato non ne sapevamo nulla prima di visitarlo. Avevamo a disposizione un’intera spiaggia di sabbia bianca a nostra disposizione!

Cape Town local guide: 5 unusual and unique places to visit

Cape Town is not a city made only of concrete and buildings, but is immersed in nature. For this reason, coming here don’t just mean going around visiting buildings and museums, but also having incredible experiences like trekking or diving with sharks.

Breathtaking views at Table Mountain

Table Mountain is one of the most iconic landmarks in South Africa, as well as being one of the most photographed attractions. The summit can be reached by a panoramic cable car that allows you to admire one of the most incredible views of Cape Town. Hold your breath and enjoy the moment!

Swim with the penguins in Simons Town

Do something unique and go to Boulders Beach in Simons Town to swim with the penguins. Here the penguins have created their own colony thanks to the rocks and the caves that protect the animals from wind and weather. Put on a swimsuit and swim with these beautiful penguins.

Diving with white sharks

If the penguins are too sweet for you, dive with the white sharks. You will feel the adrenaline rising instantly. In this area there are many white sharks and to see them up close you can dive in a cage and enjoy the show.

South African wine tastings

Did you know that South African wine is really good? Close to Cape Town there are lots of vineyards and you can spend a unusual day tasting as many glasses as you can.

Among the many restaurants in Cape Town, the most incredible is certainly the Taj Hotel Restaurant. The atmosphere is great and the menu offers different kinds of dishes, all good and unforgettable.

Interview with The Globetrotter Guys: full-time travelers

We had the pleasure of chatting with Sion and Ben who told us more about their work as travel bloggers and full-time travelers since 2018.

When was the project The Globetrotter Guys born and why did you decide to open a travel blog?

We started The Globetrotter Guys in January 2018 (both as a gay travel blog website and Instagram account at the same time). We first went travelling in 2011 for 9 months and ever since then have wanted to go again. However this time, after seeing so many inspiring gay travel blogs, we thought that setting up our own would be an exciting way to document our travels and also provide gay travel advice to other future travellers!

How is traveling as a couple and how do you choose the destinations to visit?

We try to focus on destinations that neither of us have travelled to and also where gay travel has not been explored extensively. For example we spent a lot of time in Central America last year and the things we learnt about countries like Guatemala and Nicaragua were really surprising! We also try to go slow. If we are constantly moving every few days is can be frustrating so we much prefer having a base for a few months at a time.

Traveling together can be very difficult in countries where being gay is still illegal. Do you visit these countries or do you prefer to avoid them?

We have not yet. We completely understand the arguments for and against but we can be quite risk adverse and it is important to consider safety. To date we have not felt unsafe in any of the destinations we have travelled to for being gay.
Do you have a travel memory that has remained particularly in your heart?

One of the best memories from last year was being blown away by the Corn Islands in Nicaragua. It was truly a hidden paradise, we had not heard of it before and most people we spoke to had not either. We had a whole, pristine, white sand beach all to ourselves!
